  3. I was in the Air Force in a highly deployable career field and the first time I got to stay in a hotel when I deployed was Augest 2001. I had been in the AF for just under 18 years. I was staying in the Cairo Intercontinental on a training mission that changed to a real world mission on 9-11.

I was supposed to spend 6 weeks at the hotel building a Comm sight out in the desert and rotate back stateside when the sight would be turned over to operators. I spent 2 weeks at the Intercon and the next 3 months in a tent in the desert.

  4. way back machine-on! observed all the young marines at kadena servicing harriers and sleeping next to the taxiway. i questioned that. was told they had to fight to get the tents and actually had cots in them. they munched on mres all the while. pretty sad state of affairs. the SAC tanker unit had a dining hall just down the street but the marines were forbidden to utilize it.
on the plus column, the marines got excellent views of the night takeoffs of the sr71 flights. don't know if that evened it up at all.
