That was awesome, thanks for posting it. I watched the whole video. I'd read about Major Bong when I was a teen, with my sights on the USAF Academy. Fascinating to hear the rest of the story that isn't in the history textbooks!
There was a planned Richard I.Bong Air Force Base located in southern Wisconsin between Milwaukee & Chicago. Construction was started in 1955, but abandoned in 1959. The area is now called the Bong Recreation Area, owned by the state and, among other things, high power rocketry events take place there almost monthly.
There used to be a P-38 mounted on pylons in Poplar. Some years ago they took it down. There is now a museum for Bong in Superior. They have a P-38 and a life-size diorama of a South Pacific air base.
