my Dad was in the navy in WW2. the whole damn time. he ALWAYS called the "fucking navy" at Arlington when we buried him. the navy did the show. they did Dad alright too. had 2 naval officers to "help out" even. that was when we found out dad and not one but two navy crosses for valor and like 17 or more battle stars (?) my brother and two brothers in law wore army greens. I wore a suit as I couldn't find my army shit. one of them asked why no navy guys ? then I told him that Dad always called the fucking navy and how shitty it was during his time in. the navy called him back for 2 years in the Korean war ( that pissed him off to no end ) . anyway, the one officer said to me, well with all of what my dad had on his jacket, he earned the right to call it whatever he wanted too. Dad hated the navy, boats, the water and all the shit in it and seafood. we never went to the beach as a kid. never. and it was only 1.5-2 hours away too. he told us about the storms of 44 and how the navy "lost a few ships" to it. but yet, Mom always said he wanted to paint the house grey ?????
Old salts like your father were the reason I enlisted in '85, in my opinion ( I'm sure I'm wrong but it's mine ) the navy from John Paul Jones forward to me had such an honorable history. I muttered more than a million times myself " fucking navy " we all did, looking back it was one of the most pivotal times in my life. I'm going to raise a beer to your father when I get home my brother.
one other thing I said to that officer was "I can walk a lot farther than I can swim" that and the stories about sharks that followed the fleet around hoping to get fed. I not sure how many times he had to help get guys out of the water, but he said after you pull the first guy in and find out that he is "gone" from the life jacket down, that is when you really start to hate sharks. I have his old navy photo on the wall and say hi and good night to it every day. BTW, the God damn army was no cake walk either. there a reason behind FTA. 1/503 PIR a long time ago now.
