While i have never been the reason for an HR rule... Back in college I was informed that my radioactive isotope i had stored in my dorm room was against policy. I pointed out that the rules did not ban radioactives. They said it was a dangerous material, my counter was it was less radioactive than the smoke detectors in dorm and if they banned my source then they would be admitting the smoke detectors were dangerous and would have to replace them all. The next semester they added radioactive materials specifically to the banned items list. 20 years later a buddies kid was attending same college and it was still in the rules. Ten years after that obe of my kids attended there and her friends laughed about that rule and thought it was weird till my daughter told them who and why it was added.
