At what point does it switch from obligation to revered tradition?

I cannot hear that song by the Cars without thinking of this scene. Sort of like Wonderful World by Sam Cooke and the cafeteria scene in Animal House. But obviously this one's better.
I've never found a clip with the song, I haven’t stopped searching though...
