Not to be argumentative, but the so-called civil war (really a war of northern aggression to prevent legal southern secession) did NOT MAKE THINGS BETTER. One could easily argue that Lincoln's destruction of the Constitution and his treasonous waging of war against American citizens, laid the foundation for the horrors we face today. And of course Lincoln was a republican.
