The float and head mount on the water column on the side of the boiler, when the water level drops it closes a snap switch that turns on a feed pump to add water.
Is there a lower switch that shuts off fuel flow or is it small enough it doesn't require one?
All the boilers i'm used to are industrial, so 4 sets of level switch banks. HHLS, HLS, LLS and LLLS. Each bank has 3 switches with 2 out of 3 voting. Plus any time you have one disagreeing it alarms on the panel to get maintenance sent out.
So what does the float switch monitor or regulate?

Is the low level alarm or the low level water cut off switch? Direct insertion into a drum or does this boiler have a level column?
